And kept falling down so she had been whining for help.

Late Friday, I noticed that Gi's open wound had turned black ... black mucus. It's not a good sign. So off to the vet.

As expected, the open wound had gone worse ... gone inwards. The first solution was to surgically remove the infected skin and let it heal on its own. But given Gi's age and the lack of skin around the wound, the vet decided to try medication. The wound might not close up due to the old wound but I am ok with it as long it's not infected. So Gi was prescribed antibiotics, saline solution and cream.

Today is the 5th day and I am relieved to see that the black mucus is gone. Gonna continue the treatment until the next check-up on 6 Aug.

Yeah yeah ... I shud have brought her to the vet in the first place ... blah blah blah ... *roll eyes with a cheeky grin*

A New Bed

I've finally gotten off my lazy bum and sew a dog bed for Gi.

I did buy a bed from petedge.com a year ago. But somehow, it got "blown away". So being the cheapo me, I decided to sew a bed for her instead. Especially when I have the materials & know-how.

So now, Gi has two beds -a Slumber Pet Sherpa Crate Bed (from petedge.com , bought many moons ago) and this new red pokka dots bed.

THE OLD WOUND
Nope. I didn't go to the vet cos I wanna try a DIY medication - Colloidal Silver. I had seen its healing effects on a Syrian's open wound on the head. So I wanna give it a try.

Unfortunately after two bottles, it was not healing as I expected. In fact, the medication seems to be drawing out the toxic (aka white discharge). Altho that was a good sign, I wasn't liking it.

So after doing some internet searching, I switched to Betadine. This seemed to stop the white discharge by turning it brown. But it created a stench. And that is a sign of infection. So I went to the local pharmacy for some remedy. The pharmacist recommended DuoDerm Hydroactive Gel. She said the gel can draw out whatever toxic is in the wound.

I'm into the 4th day of using the gel and so far so good - no more white discharge, the stench has lessen. Will continue using.

EYE ULCERS
Earlier this year, Gi was having some massive brown discharge from the eyes. And the right eye appeared to be swollen. Upon closer inspection, I noticed a scratch surrounded by a whitish coat. On the pupil. In both eyes. The vet diagnosed it as Eye Ulcer.

It seemed like this is a no-cure prognosis. Just have to let it heal on its own. So Gi was prescribed an eye drop. After one month, there's no improvement in the condition. So I stopped.

But recently I noticed that her eyes have lesser discharge and the scratch has miraclously disappeared. So what happened? I suspected it is the workings of the Nzymes Antioxidant Treats. I bought this to "cure" / improve Gi's arthritis. Altho it is not working for her arthritis, the product can be used as a multi-vits. So I have been feeding her ever since.

Besides the eye ulcer, I also noticed that the discharge from her private parts has lessen a lot.

So the antioxidant is helping her.

JAMMED UP
Her poo-jam was caused by this. It is too rich for her. Likewise this. So I am back to raw mutton. And since I am feeding the hamster brood veges, I'm pureeing them for Gi too. And so far so good. No poo-jam.

ARTHRITIS

This is one battle I'm giving up. It's too late for any cure and/or improvement.

The Empress Dowager is saying that should Gi lost the use of her hind legs, it's time to let her go. On top of this, Gi will be 14yo this Nov. That will be 98 human years old.

To be frank, Gi is only flawed in her skin, her eyes and her hind legs. She is still greedy as ever. Come meal time, she behaves as if I've been starving her. Forever.

From the looks of it, she is healthy & fit. So what gives me the right to PTS her??!!!

Gi's old wound has reopened. And she's been licking it until the open wound has some pus covering it. Gonna keep it as dry as possible.

Then there some discharge coming out from her private part. Not a good sign.

Haiz! I'll be making a trip to the vet this Saturday ... to check on the open wound, the discharge. And also to ask more one the injection-treatment.

I ever asked a fellow dog-lover owner ... is old age a valid reason to put the dog to sleep ... esp when the old age comes with all sorts of health issues? But again the dog is as healthy as it can be. Just that the owner's heart break when she knows that there are deeper issues.

Not Good

Gi only has two sessions of the injection treatment and it seems to make things worse.

When she stands up, her hind legs are spread very far apart ... as if she has no control over it. On top of that, she is having a major problem in getting up. So much so that she will whine for help.

I didn't go for the 3rd session last Saturday and I can see some improvement. If this goes on, I have a feeling the treatment is not helping her.

So far the only side effects I read online are [their pet may be a little quieter than usual. Throughout clinical trials, there were only two cases of abdominal bleeding, two vomiting cases and one case of diarrhea.] Nothing on the physical aspect. Nope, the vet didn't inform me of any side effects too.

Ever since I stopped the acupuncture for Gi's arthritis, it had gotten a tad worse. To the extent that she is unable to get up properly on her own.

And since I last brot her to the hospital, I decided to ask the vet for a suitable long-term treatment for it. And she mentioned Cartrophen Injection. After making some inquiries with my regular vet, I had decided to try this treatment. With this, I can also continue with the joint supplement. Plus another for the nerves along the spine. The vet said it is okay to feed her the human grade. So I will be getting that this weekend.

Just keeping fingers crossed that all these will help to ease Gi's discomfort.

For the past few days, Gi is unable to push out her poo. So I will be bringing her to the hospital in a while.

Her arthritis is at its worst. Cos she is unable to get up from sleep-position. Nor can she move her hind legs.

Is old age & its accompany ailment a valid reason for euthanization? Is loss of hind legs a valid reason for euthanization?

Good news #1: Gi's poo came out of its own accord in the hospital. So no drip, no flush and no hospitalization.

Good news #2: There is an injection-treatment for arthritis. It's a long-term-maintenance treatment. So I will check with my vet for more details.

But once she arrived here, Mrs Marjorie Doggett took up a cause that was closest to her heart – preventing human acts of cruelty against animals – and left a legacy for Singaporeans in the form of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

On Sunday night, Mrs Doggett died at her Toh Heights home of 33 years, after years of ill health.

She was 89.

Her key achievements after arriving here from England in 1947 include co-founding a voluntary service which rescued stray cats from Singapore's streets, which later morphed into the SPCA.

Thanks in large part to her efforts, the organisation has grown significantly, a far cry from its early days, when funding was scarce and supporters fluctuated due to a predominantly expatriate membership.

Mrs Doggett was so keen on protecting animals that in those days, she did much of the work herself. For example, qualified veterinarians were a rarity here, so she often resorted to rescuing cats from the streets and whisking them by car to the government's sole Animal Infirmary in Kampong Java.

'She started the ball rolling – and was still at it 60 years later,' said Ms Deidre Moss, SPCA's current executive officer, paying tribute to Mrs Doggett's passion, knowledge on animal issues and willingness to mentor younger volunteers.

'She was a walking encyclopedia, keeping so much literature on animal welfare,' added Ms Moss.

Policymakers also had the benefit of tapping into her knowledge on issues ranging from the wildlife trade to the use of animals in science laboratories, noted Mr Madhavan Kannan, former head of the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority's Centre for Animal Welfare and Control, who first worked with Mrs Doggett in the 1970s.

'She was one of the early pioneers among people who championed the cause of animals,' he said.

She also raised awareness of the issue by writing frequently to The Straits Times' Forum pages about the cruelty dealt to some animals here.

Mrs Doggett's relationship with animals started early. She grew up surrounded by them at her home in Sussex, England. By the time she was in secondary school, she was taking up the cause that would define her life, fighting for the rights of animals.

Mrs Doggett moved to Singapore with her husband, Victor, who was posted here by the Royal Air Force. They subsequently decided to settle here permanently, becoming Singapore citizens in 1960.

Mr Doggett died five years ago after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Besides animals, Mrs Doggett also had a passion for photography, and particularly liked capturing historical buildings, many of which have since been demolished. In 1957, a book entitled Characters Of Light was published, showing some of her collection.

But animals were far and away her first love. The couple's only son, Nicholas, 52, told The Straits Times that even as the end drew near, his mother maintained her fondness for critters, often surrounding herself with the family's seven pet cats.

He said that she had remained fiercely protective of them, even when her capacity to walk was hampered.

'We had a cat who would bully the other cats. She took me aside one night and said, 'you'd better stop that cat from terrorising the others. Otherwise, I will do it, even if I have to crawl out of my bed on all fours'.'

Altho I hv to expect some sort of side effects. And as long as the side effects are not damaging, why not.

I get to know this pdt in the local doggie forum a few weeks ago. After some reading and researching, it seems like a good product. Esp when it doesn't contain the ingredient that can cause Gi to have adverse skin reaction.

And since I've more or less stopped the acupuncture sessions, I hv to look for alternatives in regards to her arthritis. And since there are good reviews abt this pdt in that aspect. On top of this, the website has this promotion of buy-1-get-1-free. So I decided to give it a try. Had just placed an order for it. Expecting the delivery in two weeks' time.

Gi's arthritis has returned after a two-month hiatus. So will be bringing her to the acupuncture-vet 2mrw.

Will be checking with vet if it's possible to use Western supplements to keep the arthritis at bay. Cos having a regular acupuncture-visit is a costly affair.

Update on the K9 Diet

It's been one month since I started Gi on the K9 Diet.

There was a hiccup initially. Gi's output was extremely difficult cos it's hard & dried-up. And she lost 1kg within 1wk which was serious cos her spine & hip bones can be seen at a glance.

So after much discussion and consultation, I have finally settled on a routine re the diet. And that is to alternate the raw diet with the K9. The former to maintain her mass, the latter to provide her with the nutrients. So now her diet plan is a cycle of 2 days raw + vege, 1 day egg + vege, 1 day K9 + vege & 1 day egg + vege. With this, her raw diet is only beef, instead of chicken.

It's been 2 weeks since I started on the new regime. And I am glad to report that she is back to her usual weight of 3.5kg.

But her arthritis is back. So I have to make a trip down to the vet for a few sessions of acupuncture + a new dose of TCM medications.

I was told that astronauts bring FREEZE DRIED food on their trips to the orbit. And since it is nutritious enuf for the astronauts, why not our furkids?

Gi had her first FREEZE DRIED meal last night. As with any new food introduction, I expected her to have an adverse output. Surprisingly, there was none. With this, I assumed that the nutrients are of the correct portion for her body and had thus been utilized to the max, leaving none as wastage. And this is a good sign. Therefore I shall continue with this meal and see how it goes.

Oh, this product is at least S$10 cheaper than BARF SG. And it is also easier to store and prepare.

The vet wanted a twice weekly visits - Wednesday & Saturday. But I cannot afford to take leave. So I've opted for a weekly visits on the Saturday. Yes, the treatment will take longer to take effect but it's better than nothing.

The vet might ... may I add a BIG BIG BIG might ... be able to regain Gi's eyesight. It'll be a miracle if he's able to do so. O'wise, treating her of the leg problems is good enough for me.

I had decided not to euthanize Gi.

Cos she is only 10% disabled.

So I'm gonna hang onto her for as long as she lets me to.

In domesticated animals, this process is commonly referred to by the euphemisms "lay down," "put down," "put to sleep," "put out of its/his/her misery," or "sent away to the farm."

And some of the reasons for euthanasia

Illness or broken limbs that would cause suffering for the animal to live with, or when the owner has insufficient financial reserves to pay for treatment.
Old age - Deterioration to loss of major bodily functions. Severe impairment of the quality of life.

I am a single mom supporting a growing son, an aging mother and a housing mortgage.

Old Age
Gi will be 12yo in Nov 2009. That is equivalent to 84 human years old.

Deterioration to loss of major bodily functions
Dec 2007: Gi was diagnosed being blind.
Nov 2008: Gi was diagnosed with arthritis and it has gotten worse recently.

Illness or broken limbs
Dec 2008: Gi was suspected to have breast cancer.
June 2009: There’s a growth in Gi’s left front shoulder joint which is causing her to not able to use her left fore leg and limping too. And it’s suspected to be a cancerous growth.

With all of the above, they shud be reasons enough for me to euthanize her knowing that what I’ve done is for her best interest. So why is my mind *STILL* searching for alternatives to prolong her life?

I was away the last few days. When I got back, my mum told me that Gi has had some loose stools.

She had them a few days ago. And the only change to her diet was the removal of veges. So I strongly doubt it's due to that. Therefore I am suspecting that something inside is causing those loose stools. Gonna ask the vet abt this.

And I also noticed that the swell on her shoulder has grown bigger in size over the last few days.

No good.

No good at all.

The Impending Doom

Two weeks ago, Gi was prescribed the anti-inflammatory & painkillers for her slight-limping condition. It worked fine for the first few days. But come the fifth day, it became worse. Her left fore leg was in such a position that it was hanging in midair, as if frozen in that position.

So on the next review, we discovered that there's a slight swell on that same shoulder, thus explaining the hanging-frozen position. The vet even suspected a cancer growth. But that is not confirmed until the next review which will include another x-ray. Again, Gi was prescribed the same meds.

Altho today's only the 2nd day after the last review, there's been no improvement in her condition. Still that hanging-frozen position. And she's been sleeping near the kitchen entrance instead of her usual corner under the dinning table. As if ... as if ...

R mentioned that maybe ... maybe it's time to let Gi go, given her age and medical conditions during this past one year. Even the Empress Dowager said the same thing. I know we will come to this end. But ... But ...

Let me go thru one more vet review and x-ray, then ... then ...

Not Good

There's a soft lump/swelling on Gi's left shoulder. That might be the cause of her limping and "hanging" position.

The vet suspected cancer growth. But can't tell yet. So have scheduled another review next week which will include another x-ray.

So meanwhile, another round of the same medications. Hope it'll help to reduce the swelling which will mean it's due to the arthritics.

Ever since Gi's last ops, I've been feeding her more veges than meat. Meant to balance her diet but it backfires on me. Cos she's getting so thin that an outsider would see her as mal-nourished ... aka boney and all.

So with the vet's green light, I'm reverting back to an all-meat diet. It'll consist only chicken neck (if I can get it in the supermarket), chicken meat (of all sorts - chop, fillet, breast) and lamb. Hope to see results in time for the next medical preview.

Her arthritics is getting worse. That's why she's limping. Given her age & the extent of damage, nothing much can be done. So the vet prescribed the painkiller and anti-inflammatory meds. If it works at the end of it, she'll prescribed it on a long terms basis.

Yes, we'll be back for a review in a weeks' time.

Neither New Nor Old

Just something different.

I'm starting Gi on this supplement. It's a multi-vit plus Glucosamine. With this, I will stop feeding her the human-grade glucasamine & calcium.

I'm starting this cos I dun think she's being equipped with all the nutrients she needs with the raw diet I'm feeding her.

Why am I getting this, instead of others? Reason being I had good "experience" with their poo-odour-control - Mushroom Extract. So I have enough faith in this brand to try this supplement. Plus there are some position reviews abt it so I decided to try.

Altho the nutrient list stated that methionine is good for the skin and coat, I'm gonna continue with the human-grade Omega3-6-9.

Note: after searching online on methionine, it's not exactly meant for the skin/coat where dogs are concern. But it does help in the other aspects.

Gi's tear stains are getting lesser due to the extensive use of the contact lens' saline solution. And I've given her a trim to give her a cleaner & neater look.

Then Gi's skin is improving after I've started using the Johnson's Baby Shower on her, instead of the commercial dog's shampoo.

New Routine

From today onwards, I'll be implementing a new routine for Gi - Petz Life Oral Care.

I chanced upon this product in a local beauty forum. Some of the members raved abt it. So I decided to read more abt it. And true enuf, even its local (US) market also raved abt it. So will be monitoring Gi's stained teeth for this whole month.

This is what Gi's teeth looks right now - 5 months after her last teeth scaling. Yes, it's starting to turn yellow despite my daily brushing. Therefore I need a strong "dose" to it.

Speaking of routine, I have been using the saline solution for contact lens to work on Gi’s tear stains. And it seems to be working.

Initially I just used it as a final rinse. But now I use it to wash the stain.

So gonna continue with it and see how far it’ll go.

A mummy-fren of mine has just lost her 19yo female JRT.

The furkid hadn't been eating and drinking for the past few days. And it's suspected to be lungs problem and the vet was not sure if she'll survive it via medication. So the owner decided to let the JRT go humanely.

The lil one passed away peacefully yesterday.

Penny for Me Thots

Gi's arthritis is getting worse. More obvious limping. And the extreme stiffening of her legs when walking.

From this pic, you can see the weird position of her hind legs. Okay, maybe tat's due to the "forced" sit I did to her. But still ...

Sometimes it seems like she has not much muscular control over her hind legs. Cos she cud ... No, she did tip forward a few times. As if her fore legs are bearing down with more weight.

With this, I was super tempted to get a physical check on her legs. But ... I fear for the worst. Like she's in great pain. So what shud I do? Let her live out her life in pain? Or end it for her?

Gi will be 13 12yo this November. That will be 91 84 human years old.

A False Alarm

My mum mentioned in passing that Gi seems to have a problem moving her bowels. And I witnessed that myself. As that cud be a sign of digestive problem. And given Gi's age ... I got scared for a minute there.

But thankfully, I managed to "solve" that problem with a bit of assistance. It seems like her bowel was a tad too big to be extracted out naturally. So yeah .... Gi had a C-section-bowel-removal. LOL!!!!!

Gi's tear stain is getting worse. Or maybe it's due to her short coat.

As compared to the last pics, the stain has spread to the under-eye area.

I have been cleaning & powdering everyday. Still, unable to reduce the stained area.

So shud I pay a visit to the vet? Cos they will only subscribe eye drops ... which might not help at all.

Gi is on her way home from the groomer now.

Yes, I did mention hv’g her groomed two weeks ago. But my mum wasn’t ard at the last minute. So it was a wasted trip on the groomer’s part. Therefore he had kindly arranged for another appointment on 25 Mar.

I thot I cud wait until then. But I cudn’t. Cos Gi’s been licking her paws as if her life is dependent on it. *roll eyes* So I went back to my usual groomer – Annie’s Pet Corner.

Actually I shud’ve gone to APC but dunno for what reason I just didn’t. So … *shrugs shoulder*

Nevertheless, will post pics of Gi later. *wink wink*

An Authentic Breed

This was the last time Gi looks like a Maltese. All white & clean. With a beautiful pair of "turquoise" eyes.

So what happened? What did I do then?

I remembered that Gi went on a strike for 6mths, refusing to eat the kibbles. And during those 6mths, I had switched three brands of kibbles - Pedigree, Science Diet and SolidGold. But she simply refused to eat. After much researching, I stumbled upon BARF - Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. In simple terms, raw meat.

That was my last resort cos I was too lazy to prepare home-cook food. And thankfully, Gi took to BARF like fish to the water. And within one month, she was as good as new.

Altho Gi is still on BARF, I doubt she can go back to that state. Maybe due to her old age? But now, it might be due to her blindness. Nevertheless, I am & always will be maintaining her condition to my utmost best.

Speaking of which, I am sending Gi for grooming next Wednesday. And I am super tempted to shave her down.

Altho I can do that myself, it won't be a clean job. Esp on her legs. Besides it's a tedious 4hr job. So for this time, I'd rather let the professionals do the job. Then I'll follow-up with the maintenance.

If not for this, I wouldn't know that Gi's raw diet can be prepared in this manner. Yes, I am THAT toad. (PS: I use my mobile to take the pics thus its bad quality.)

Managed to dig up this white-elephant food processor
from Empress Dowager's cabinets.

And thankfully it's still working.

This puree consists of a handful of cabbage,
two carrots and
a stalk of kia lan.

This consists of a S$4 minced lamb,
S$2 chicken chop and
half a pack of a S$2 chicken fillet.

This is the result of combining the above two.

Each patty holds 3 heaps of tablespoon food.
And there are a total of 7.5 patties.

All those amount to just S$8 for a week's meal. So that means for 1 month, it'll only cost me ... S$32?!! That is 2 times lesser than getting from BARF SG. And I hvn't add in the delivery charge.

I've heard of bad experiences from dog owners re this particular pet shop. Esp so of them being a solely commercial-profit-purpose-only entity. And the sales agreement that they made the new owners sign is the proof of it. "... the sales agreement that states the farm cannot be held responsible once the animal is outside its premises." If they are not fearful/guilty, why should such an agreement be implemented?

(PS: I will post pics of Gi this weekend ... aka Valentine's Day. Cos last weekend, I've accidentally trimmed Gi's muzzle. So wanna outgrow it first. Yes, she's not as pretty as before *boo hoo hoo*)

Since Gi's stitches are removed. And the wounds & scars are healing very nicely.

But Gi is licking that area for God-knows-why. Maybe it's due to the aloe vera gel.

Good To Go

First & foremost, the scars don't look THIS BAD in real life.

Gi had her stitches removed early this morning. The vet said the red scar is normal. Due to the stitches being embedded in the skin for 3 wks. On top of that, it was stitched very tightly.

Luckily I hv standby the Aloe Vera Gel for her scars.

The gel did wonders for my tummy's rashes some time ago. Thus it is bound to do the same for Gi's scars.

With the stitches removed, I can FINALLY give Gi a shower. Not that she's not smelling nice now. It just makes me feel better that she has been properly showered.

Another Visit

Another report.

The main reason for visiting the vet before the 3wks are up is that there is a lump left behind on Gi. Yes, the vet did do a thorough check but had missed it.

So I inquired if it's okay to let it be. The vet replied saying it'd be defeating the whole purpose of the surgery in the first place. So she suggested removing it which means another round of GA for Gi. Altho it'll be faster & cheaper, I just dun like the idea of Gi going under the knife ... again ... so soon. To me, since Gi had already been sterilized, I doubt the lump will grow. Likewise for new lumps.

Nevertheless, I will monitor her until March 2009 to see how it goes.

After Ops - Day 3

For 3 wks, I will take very much longer than usual to clean Gi up after dinner. Esp when she's not allowed to shower during this time. So in order for her not to stench, I hv to blow dry her. And dust her with some grooming powder. Altho the powder is making it easy to comb her coat, I dun like the sticky feel of it. So I'll switch to the J&J Aloe Vera & Vit E Powder to see how it goes.

On top of applying powdered antibiotics on her wounds, I also hv to apply ear drops. Her ears have an on-off affair with Mr. Ear-Infection. Speaking of her wounds, she has some stitches on her belly. With me being a scaredy-cat and not wanting to touch the stitches, I hv to use the mirror in order to apply on the right spot.

And with her teeth scaling, I hv to be diligent to brush her teeth. Cos now her teeth are pearly white and her breadth is "fresh".

As today's the 1st time I'm cleaning her up after the ops, I had to use exceptionally more tissues to do a good job. Esp with the pus accumulating at her vagina & the massive discharge from her ears. Yes, I will be bringing her back to the vet this Friday re the vagina discharge. Haiz!

Nevertheless, she's much more alert than the last two days. Yet she's having an anxiety attack close to bedtime. That explains the massive eye discharge (aka tears of anxiety). I suspect the e-collar is mixing up her sense of direction. Thus she'll be sleeping in my bedroom until further notice. I can hear her e-collar banging against the cabinets & all as I type this. Thankfully, she is still able to find her way to her toilet area. O'wise the Empress Dowager & I will be busy cleaning after her.

After her stitches are removed and her wounds have recovered, I'll be trimming her to a puppy cut ... or just shave her down completely.

After Ops - Day 2

Gi is still groggy from the ops thus she's been sleeping on & off ... whenever she deems fit.

Overnight, the wounds have healed rather well. The skin is closing up. And it has dried up too.

I've just fed her meds with some raw liver. Hope the liver will aid in her recovery.

On top of the lumps removal & sterilization, Gi also has her teeth scaled and a few rotten ones extracted. Yup, it was a long surgery for Gi. Despite the vet's assurance that it's ok, I'm still a tad worried abt the GA's effects on her. Cos this morning, she is looking a tad too disorientated for my ease of mind. Or maybe it's the e-Collar . Nevertheless, I will be observing her until the next check-up which will be in 3 wks' time.

With the teeth extraction, Gi will hv problems chewing the food. So gonna hv to remind myself to cut smaller pieces of meat for her.

Gi was very groggy but she still managed to wag her tail at my calling her.

The stitches & wound look super raw & gross. But after a while, I'm ok with it. And I dare to say that the vet's workmanship sucks.

And much to my surprise, Gi was well enough to start walking after resting for 1hour or so. And the first thing she did was looking for water. Altho the vet said no water & food until the next morning, I gave her a few sips to quench her thirst.

With her coming around, I put on the e-Collar despite the discomfort.

The Day is Set

On 13 Dec, Sat to operate on Gi. To get rid of the uninvited guests.

First to go is this big blood clot on her right hind legs.
Yes, it is THAT big. Luckily it has kinda stopped growing for a while.

Next is this FIRST breast cancer lump.
Upon closer inspection, two small fellas have popped up.

Last but not least, it's this SECOND small-but-growing-bigger lump that was discovered by the vet.
Not only has it grown bigger. It has brought along a "friend" too.
After all these have been removed, she'll be sterilized. All in all, it'll take one whole hour. Hope the GA won't harm her, altho the vet said it's the type of GA meant for elderly dogs.

It's a good thing that I've decided to put her under the knife. Cos with the rate the lumps are appearing, it's freaking me out .... real bad ... real real real bad. *shudder in disgust, fear & disbelief*

To the Old Dame

Cos today marks the 12 11th year she's been with me.

Yes, today is Gi's birthday.

But it's the 2nd time I'm celebrating her birthday.
The first time was when she turned 1yo.
I'm not much of a birthday-celebration-person.
But still I did something different today.
And that is taking pics with Gi.

A Close Call

And there is STILL hope for Gi.

Her limping is caused by arthritics. It will not go away but I can ease the discomfort with supplements (GNC Triflex) and prescribed drugs (aka anti-inflammatory pills). Aided with massage and DIY physio-therapy.

Gi has a new tiny lump near another lymph node. It's so tiny that you have to go look for it before detecting it.

The vet has given me hope that with surgery, Gi mite be cleared of the cancer cells, since it was discovered early - early this yr to be exact. And the possibility of a hormone-incurred cancer is very high, the vet has suggested spaying her too. The vet has also assured me that a special type of GA will be used for elderly dogs like Gi. So with this, I am very certain to have Gi go under the knife - for one solid hour, to remove the two lumps, one big blood clot at her hips and spay her. Now it's to find an auspicious day for it.

BTW, the vet has also reaffirmed my online findings re the lack-of cancer symptoms in dogs. Cos dogs do not have the normal / usual symptoms as humans.

On a lighter note, Gi is not losing weight or whatsoever. Especially not due to the cancer. The vet explained tat as dogs age, they will lose muscle mass. Likewise with the humans. Thus the bones will be more prominent.

Something is NOT Right

Gi has been limping for some time now. I think right after she was diagnosed being blind. But I have forgotten to mention it during the last vet visit. Thus I have intended to do so on the next visit - 8 Nov.

Then this morning, I noticed Gi's limping is worse.

Previously, she limped as if her hind legs are stiff and unable to bend. But this morning, she was limping physically ... with the whole body-works ...

Have just booked an appointment with The Vet Practice for this Sunday.

Just hope it's her joints at fault. Cos that can be assisted with supplements. O'wise ... ...

Nothing Much Is Happening

But I did notice the lump has grown bigger ... Or is it my mind's playing tricks on me?

I also noticed that Gi's been loosing weight. As in her spine is getting more obvious. Likewise with her pelvic bones. But she is eating normally. In fact I've increased her meal portion. But still ...

I can't find anything on the web re the cancer symptoms on dogs. Just the usual case of lumps near the lymph nodes.

So shud I worry ... or just take it easy until the next vet chkup?

It Never Rains

But it Pours.

Firstly I never knew it has been THIS LONG since Gi was diagnosed going blind. It has been close to 9 months. *slapping me forehead*. Time sure fly past quickly & unnoticed when you're tied up & down with life.

Like I mentioned back then, despite her being blind, I'm okay to "let it rest" (aka accepting the harsh fact) as long as it is not causing her any physical discomfort. But today at the vet, I was being chided for delaying the check-up. Cos there is ... or was ... the possibility of salvaging her eyesight if I had followed up with an immediate specialist consultation. Yes, I was banging my head against the wall. But I dun regret my decision then.

At the same time knowing that Gi was going blind, I noticed a small lump near one of her nipples. Again, no cause for alarm as there hasn't any physical discomfort and adverse effects on her general well-being, so I "let it be". All I did (and still am doing) is to monitor it. After all these months, it is growing in size ... slowly.

When the vet asked me 'Is she sterilized?", I saw a white (or is it red??) flag with the words "breast cancer" waving at me. And I was correct. That lump is breast cancer. All becos Gi isn't sterilized.

Well, I wasn't as shaken at this news as when I was told Gi was going blind. Guess after that, nothing will ever shake me up. Again. Still, it was a wake-up call that sterilization does have its benefits.

But it did bring about a shocking "WHAT??!!!" from the Empress Dowager & bro's gf when I broke the news to them. Nonchalantly. *cheesy grin*

Then the Empress Dowager ended the whole saga with "If Gi cannot make it anymore, euthanize her. Don't let her suffer." Yes, she still remembers how much Max had suffered greatly before passing. Yes, I am totally with her on this.

With the newest member of family on a growth spurt, things had finally settled down to a routine.

With both of them enjoying each other's company ... much to my mum's disgust. LOL!!!

But they are a pair like none other.

A Drastic Change

It is really unbelievable that so much cud change w/in 6 months. Especially one was so caught up with own life thus neglecting others.

At this time, I was close to 7 months pregnant. And during so, the whole family was concentrated on my pregnancy, rather than on GiGi. Luckily I was conscious enough to have her shave down ... to cut down effort and time on grooming her.

But sad to say, it was the beginning of a long struggle for both of us. Cos with those long period of neglect, GiGi's skin had suffered dearly from it. From then on, it has been an on-off affair with skin problems.

Altho the Maltese breed is prone to skin problems, GiGi never had problem with it. Not even when my mum was using the human pdt on her. Guess that was GiGi's way of telling me she felt neglected and depressed.

Fortunately, her skin problem is not so severe that it needs regular medication. All I hv to do is to maintain her coat short. And shower her with Troy Selederm Medicated Wash once in a while.

With her skin sensitivity, I dun use conditioner. For fear that shud I fail to rinse off thoroughly, the residue might create another set of problems.

Despite all this, I hv always harboured some *dark* hope that her skin might improve and stay clean so that I can keep her coat long. Yet, on the other hand, I am also glad that she is healthy and well.

My Fair Lady

It was only in recent years did my mum confessed using Dove Shower Cream on GiGi when she was a puppy. As a dog owner in SG, one shud know that it's not right to use human pdts on pet-dogs cos it's not suitable for them. Fortunately, it didn't cause as much damage to GiGi as expected.

Let's Backtrack a Bit

Altho this is GiGi's blog, we cannot forget her older brother. Despite them being together for a short 2yrs, I believed that she still remembers him.

My first male Maltese was named Max. Again it was a cheap deal when I bot him. He was priced at S$450. I bought him sometime in mid 1996. He was already 6months old when GiGi came into the picture.

Max was one loving and love-to-please fella. On top of that, he was super easy to train. But not GiGi. She has the streak of a stubborn young lady. Kekekeeee!!!!

But Max passed away when he was 3 that year. My ex-hubby's niece has asked to have Max at her place for the wkend. Upon his return, he just gotten ill. After consulting the vet, it is confirmed that Max was having food poisoning. And nothing can be done. So we brought him home to be with family.

His condition was so bad that he was unable to eat nor drink. Thus causing dehydration.

The day Max died, my mum noticed GiGi staying by his side ... knowingly. Thus she gave him his last shower. And we said our last goodbyes. WIth me apologizing profusing for allowing the situation to go to such an extent.

What GiGi Meant to Me

Come to think of it, buying GiGi was like getting an advanced birthday present. Cos I bought her in early Jan 1997 which was 2 wks before my birthday in mid-January.

It is so much different between buying a pet-dog back then and now. Cos now I will hv to do research on that breed before committing myself. And also need to chk on the puppy's history - parentage, certification, microchip & all. Back then, I bought a pet-dog just for the sake of having one plus it's the cheapest I can find. Of course, not forgetting the cute factor.

It All Begins Here

Right before CNY 1997, me & my ex (then-bf) were just shopping around. At that time, we already had a male Maltese, so it's natural that we shopped around pet-related places, such as pet shops.

At that time, there was a pet shop next to Mt Pleasant Hospital @ Whitney Road. So we just popped in for a look-see. And guess what I saw??!! Yes, a lil white furball all by her lonesome self.

And what luck that the pet shop was then hv'g pre-CNY-closing sales. Thus the price tag attached to that lil furball was super low - S$550. At that time, there's no such thing as microchip nor certification of breed/background. Plus me being a first-timer as a dog owner, despite already hv'g one, I just jumped at the wonderfully-cheap chance of owning my 2nd Maltese.

From then, it's history.
